A great December weekend

Apologies in advance, as this will be a kinda long report.  We had a very busy weekend on the water…

Friday, I (Dave) was able to sneak out solo and had a great day of catching in the Cooper River.  The redfish were really chewing on the incoming tide, and the bite was this way in multiple locations that I tried.    This time of year, you need to let redfish eat before you set the hook.  Their bite will be kind of subtle – the best way to explain it is that something feels weird on the retrieve.  Then you should count to two before setting the hook.  They will really chew up a gulp because of all this mouthing of the bait.  But, if you set the hook too soon you will miss a lot by pulling it out of their mouth, or halfway to the boat because the hook set in a thin part of their mouth.  Anyway, when all was said and done, I filled an entire tagging sheet (25 entries), caught 3 previously tagged by SCDNR (orange tags), and lost 5 for reasons mentioned above – for a total of 33 reds, all caught on TroutEye jigs in glow or pearl.  For soft plastics I used a mixture of Z-man jerk shadz in Ralphs Shad, Gulp sapphire shine, and Trout Tricks, both original and the new Zman variety.

Saturday, Ralph and I fished in the annual Summerville Saltwater Angler’s “Bragging Rights Tournament”.  This is an informal tourney with no entry fees, and no prizes, just bragging rights! Those of us that fish it, feel it’s the most fun tournament of the year.  We make up the rules and have an on-the-water weigh in.  The last few years the rules are:  Must fish the Wando and tributaries, fish as boats not individuals, and each boat can weigh up to 2 reds, 2 trout and 2 flounder – total length wins.  So, there is definite strategy involved.  Flounder are golden, and it’s better to fill in the blanks than catch 1 real good fish of each type.  The weather was beautiful but the fishing was challenging to say the least.  We actually prefer this, because we feel it gives us an advantage.  We like to grind it out and find the fish.  Well, we were lucky to catch a short window in the early AM where we caught a few marginal trout and one small but keeper red.  When the sun came out it got really hard, the fish were super negative!  We knew that a flounder would be pretty hard to get for anyone, but we knew we needed one more red.  After trying many different patterns we eventually found a few more to fill in our trout and red requirements.  This proved to be enough to take the title, but not by a lot!  Weigh in was at the dock at Remleys and as always this was a good time.

After this, we picked up club member Neal, who generously donated money for a club member’s daughter who we did a fundraiser for, in exchange for an “Educational trip” with Ralph and I.  We had a short window, and as mentioned before, a day of very negative fish.  But, we made the best of it and I think we squared up his artificial technique and gave him many pointers that will serve him well in the future.  He was able to catch a few decent trout for dinner, and I even caught a nice flatty about 17″ that was a little too late for the Bragging Rights tourney, but I’m sure tasted good in Neal’s frying pan later!

A couple items of Note:

Ralph and I will be joining Mike Able Jr and Daniel Nussbaum of Zman for a seminar on cold water fishing at Haddrell’s Point Tackle in West Ashley, Tuesday Dec. 16 at 6pm.  Come on out it will be a great time.  We will be talking all things cold water trout.

Positive reports keep coming in from our customers.  Ron Davis is one of the most accomplished fishermen in our area, and co-inventor of the Chatter Bait.  He has multiple wins in the Lowcountry Redfish Cup.  He said “Did some experimenting and your jig heads produced better than all others I fished.  I rotated between 6 rods and there was definitely a difference”  “You have a winner.  Best trout jighead on the market”.

Daniel from Z-man sent in two trout over 20″ caught on the pearl jigs and the 3.5″ Z-man in Ralph’s Shad color.

Lastly, I want to remind everyone that all our bulk jigs have free shipping on our store throughout the holidays, and we even have some sampler packs that make great gifts for fishermen in your family.

Happy Holidays, and hope to see you tomorrow at Haddrells!

The fish don’t know it’s cold and wet!

Ralph and I fished today with our friend Robert.  The forecast called for 40 degree air warming to 60 and a chance of showers.  It didn’t get above the low 50’s and it was a steady rain most of the morning.  Pretty bad weather but the bite was on so how bad could it be, right?  Today we collectively caught around 80 fish, all trout and reds.  The trout were averaging 16-18″ which is better size than I have seen in a while, and SO much fun to catch.  Again, our TroutEye jigheads were used to catch all but a couple, and those were topwater trout.  They have continued to produce excellent numbers of fish for us, and we are hearing the same from our customers.  A few notable pics from the day’s outing:

This was a first for me.  I’d heard of this before, but never experienced it till today.  Caught this upper slot red on a TroutEye, and noticed a hook protruding from it’s anus.  A circle hook that had made it all the way through the digestive tract of this fish.  I gently removed the hook and sent him on his way in better shape.  Contrary to popular belief, the hook will not “rust out in a couple days”.  The hook was largely in tact, but it was able to make its way through without a problem.  Always a good idea to cut the hook in a deeply hooked fish rather than try to extract it, if it would otherwise injure the fish.

Joe’s Trip with Ralph Phillips Inshore

Each year at the Summerville Saltwater Anglers End of Year Party, we offer a full day ‘Educational’ fishing trip to the winner of a “card auction”. People purchase a playing card and as the night progresses, cards are drawn. When your card is drawn, you’re out. Joe was the big winner last year.

Joe with the first of many fish

Joe is a long time member of SSWA and a great guy and excellent chef. He was involved in a very serious wreck 7 years ago that he shouldn’t have survived, but you can’t get Joe down that easily! Joe invited his good friend Robert along for the trip. I served as videographer and mainly tried to stay out of the way and give some tips on technique and strategy while documenting our day, and what a day we had.

It was a perfect November day and we had over 50 trout with a few up to 20″ in the mix, and about 16 redfish including a triple and quadruple hookup to end our day!  What a thrill!  All around good camaraderie, good food and friends.  It doesn’t get any better…

With the exception of one trout caught on topwater, ALL fish caught today were caught on TroutEye jigs in glow or pearl, using Gulp 5″ jerk shads in sapphire shine or Trout Tricks.

Customer Feedback

Received the following letter from Charles, who won an instructional fishing trip with Ralph and I in a charity auction.

David, Enjoyed fishing with you and Ralph. I appreciate the tips you gave me. It helped to watch you both work the rods. I had not been working the Trout Trick correctly. Took what I learned to the river on 10-31-14 to practice fishing Trout Tricks. Caught ~ 12 trout incl 4 keepers – one 21″. Thanks again for taking a day off to fish with me. -Charles

The “Margarita” Slam

This time of year is a great opportunity to catch what I call a “Margarita Slam”.  This is a brackish water mega-slam consisting of:

  • Redfish
  • Trout
  • Flounder
  • Striper
  • Largemouth

Its a cool accomplishment, and very possible in two of our rivers that are fed by fresh water, the Ashley and the Cooper.  Twice this fall I have been a largemouth short when fishing in the Cooper river, but today I set out to achieve the slam!

I started out the day far upriver in the fresh water.  I had a largemouth take on a jighead but didn’t have a good hookset.  I could tell it was a largemouth because it jumped.  So, I threw a bone Spook Jr in there and got him to come up and take it!   1/5 of slam complete

Next, I had a very subtle take and hooked a flounder that was not even sammich size.  I tagged and released it and forgot to get a pic.  He was 12.5″ and all I have to show is the tagging report.  It was caught on the TroutEye jighead.  A414 is a Flounder. 2/5 of slam complete

Well, redfish and trout are pretty plentiful and eating actively this time of year.  No issues bagging them.  Had about 6 trout today.  Nothing big but a few keepers in the mix.  This one was 15″ and caught on the TroutEye jighead.  3/5 of slam complete

Three redfish today, including one kept for dinner.  Biggest today was 24.75″ (see tagging report).  Also caught on TroutEye jighead.  4/5 of slam complete.

And….The grand finale.  I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to pull this off.  Hit a few of my striper spots and it was very slow.  Keeping to one of my favorite sayings “A spot ain’t worth much, till it’s time to be there”, I waited for a tide change and lo and behold, I found a few striking bait.  I tossed the bone Spook Jr in the general area, and started walking the dog.  About 6 feet later SPLASH!  Striper on!  There is NOTHING like a striper strike on topwater.  And to complete the Margarita slam.  She went 24.5″.  Took a fin-clip for DNR and set her back.  She had a twin fish following her all the way to the boat too.  So fun and gratifying!

And that is how you complete a Margarita Slam!  By the way, why do we call it that?  A Margarita is both Salty and Sweet!

Trout-Eye Jig Successes

Yesterday Ralph and a guest fisherman fished the Charleston Executive Association fishing tournament.  Approximately 40 boats participated.  Ralph’s boat ended the day with 1st place Trout, 2nd & 3rd Redfish, and 1st and 3rd Flounder to take Outstanding Boat for the Tourney.  All fish were caught on the Trout-Eye jig heads!   I’m awaiting pictures from the event and will post when they come in.

In other news, I took my good friend Scott out fishing the other day.  He is not a very experienced saltwater fisherman, but is improving with every trip.  We ended the day with 18 redfish, 12 trout and 3 flounder.  Every fish was caught on the Trout-Eye jigs.

Lastly,  a member of Summerville Saltwater Anglers fishing club, Vince, recently set the new club record for Striper on the new jig at 27.5″.  That’s a really fine riverine striper!
